Friday in Trier, Germany

Trier is an ancient Roman city, founded by Emperor Augustus in 15 BC. The first stop on our walking tour is the Roman Throne Hall which is now a Presbyterian Church.

At one time, the Hall was plastered and painted. There are only a few areas that have plaster left like in the picture above.

This is the Electoral Palace which which is connected to the Hall. There is also a beautiful garden adjacent.

A close up of the top of the palace,  you can see the Greek goddess of love "Venus" in the center.

The left side of the picture is the Cathedral, the oldest Gothic church in Germany, begun in 313 AD. The right side is a separate church, now used as the parish church.

A picture of the inside of one area of the Cathedral.

Part of the ceiling of the cathedral.  This is not paint.  These are statues built into the ceiling!

The main market has the fountain of St. Peter which was built in 1595.

This is part of the original Porta Nigra (black gate), which is an ancient Roman fortress gate built in 175 AD of part of the wall around the city.

Then we took a choo cho ride around the city of Trier.

These are some remains of ancient Roman bath houses

In Europe it is now time for white asparagus.  Ever since we saw this we've been having asparagus.  A side dish, with dinner, with eggs for breakfast!  It's good but I think we had enough!
